Robot-Assisted Surgery

Maine's First Medical Center to Acquire a Next-Generation Surgical Robot

It never hurts to have an extra set of hands. And, at Eastern Maine Medical Center, you can rest assured knowing your care is in the best of hands, and your surgeon is surrounded by the most advanced technology of its kind in the nation.

During surgery, the surgical robot’s movements are completely controlled by the surgeon’s hands from a console next to the robotic arms. This technology provides greater range of motion, a clearer, more defined three-dimensional view for the surgeon, and better access to the surgical site and virtually any part of the body a surgeon needs to explore.

The hospital’s new robot will improve access for patients who could benefit from robot-assisted surgery, but are unable to choose this option because Eastern Maine Medical Center’s existing two surgical robots are already booked for other procedures. The technology will be used to perform procedures previously unavailable at Eastern Maine Medical Center, such as certain kinds of robot-assisted thoracic surgery.

The Nation's first Epicenter for Bariatric and General Robotic Surgery

Since 2004, EMMC has been a leader in robot-assisted surgery and is the nation's first, bariatric and general surgery robotic epicenter. Surgeons from across the country and the world are traveling to EMMC to learn the most leading edge procedures from our expertsyour surgeons.

If you or a loved one is considering traditional and other minimally invasive surgical procedures for bariatric (surgical weight loss), general, gynecologic, and urologic surgeries, as well as pelvic floor disorders, robotic-assisted surgery may be an option for you.

Benefits of Robot-Assisted Surgery

Robot-assisted surgery is one of the most effective and least invasive surgical treatment options available. Robot-assisted surgery is one type of minimally invasive surgery, and this type of surgery may lead to smaller incisions, shorter hospital stays, less pain and scarring, faster recovery, and a quicker return to normal activities.

With fluorescence imaging technology, the benefits of robot-assisted surgery are even greater.

EMMC’s team of robotic-trained, board-certified surgeons have years of experience. Each surgeon also is experienced in traditional open and other minimally invasive procedures.
