EMMC Recognized for Outstanding Cancer Care

(Bangor, Maine) – Hearing the words “you have cancer” can be life changing, but knowing that an experienced, multidisciplinary team of cancer specialists is available close to home can make all of the difference. Eastern Maine Medical Center recently received national recognition for its comprehensive cancer care services with a 2014 Outstanding Achievement Award from the American College of Surgeons’ Commission on Cancer. EMMC is one of only 75 healthcare facilities in the United States, and the only hospital in the state to earn the recognition this year.
“The credit goes to the many dedicated teams who coordinate care for our patients with cancer,” says James Raczek, MD, FAAFP, senior vice president and chief medical officer.
The path often begins with a primary care provider suggesting a referral for testing. From there, it’s an imaging study, reviewed by a radiologist, or a consult with a surgeon and a pathologist that determines the presence of a cancer. Definitive treatment often involves a surgeon as well as medical and radiation oncologists. From nurses to lab techs, pharmacists to radiation physicists, social workers to psychologists and patient advocates, many teams work together to create individualized treatment plans for each patient. Sometimes patients are eligible to enroll patients in clinical trials, which are a hallmark of EMMC’s program and an important contributor to this recognition.
“With so many specialists and caregivers working to care for these patients, we are honored that an authority on cancer treatment has found that our medical center exceeds the national standards for care of patients with cancer,” continues Dr. Raczek.
Only 15 percent of hospitals in the US and Puerto Rico received this award. This is the third time since 2004 that EMMC has received this recognition.
The American College of Surgeons recognizes hospitals for their high quality and EMMC’s cancer program has received accreditation by the American College of Surgeons’ since 1960.
