Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is the most sophisticated imaging technology available today. MRI allows doctors to view soft tissue, such as muscles, fat, and internal organs, without x-rays or surgery. It produces pictures of tissues, in any part of the body, that are clearer than x-ray or CT scans.

Using magnetism, harmless radio waves, and computer technology, MRI creates extremely detailed images on a computer screen. These images are then studied in detail by a radiologist.

An MRI is safe, painless, and comfortable. There is no radiation and there are no harmful effects of any kind. MRI does not require hospitalization. MRI is often a complementary procedure to other diagnostic exams such as x-ray, CT scans, or nuclear medicine. For certain studies, the injection of a contrast medium may be necessary to better visualize specific parts of the body.

EMMC's MRI has been accredited by the American College of Radiology (ACR). We offer the advanced technology using a patient-friendly, open bore, 1.5 Tesla magnet. The extra-large open bore accommodates patients of all shapes and sizes, and is perfect for those who get anxious or claustrophobic during an MRI.

EMMC offers outpatient MRI services conveniently at the EMMC Imaging Center, located at the EMMC Healthcare Mall on Union Street in Bangor. An MRI can be scheduled seven days a week.

We have partnered with First MRI at our main campus to assist with caring for our inpatient population.
