What to Expect at EMMC's Emergency Department

From the moment you walk through our door, we are ready to provide you with a combination of expert evaluation and compassionate care. Our goal is to get you the help you need as quickly as possible. Our Emergency Department is one of only a few in Maine where all physicians are board-certified in Emergency Medicine, and all nurses and physician extenders are trained specifically in emergency care.

You will be cared for in a modern treatment room with electronic patient monitoring. EMMC’s Emergency Department features:
  • Modern techniques and equipment
  • A chest pain program for fast evaluation and treatment
  • Decontamination procedures designed to care for chemical and biohazard emergencies
  • A complete team of critical care experts, including trauma surgeons, anesthesiologists, cardiac specialists, and adult and pediatric intensive care specialists
Emergency departments don’t operate on a first come-first served basis. Patients are seen according to how sick or injured they are. Life-threatening conditions understandably come first. After you are registered, a nurse will perform a quick assessment to determine how urgently you need to be seen by healthcare professionals. Patients are triaged according to these levels:
  • Level 1: Needs help now
  • Level 2: Needs help very soon
  • Level 3: May need help soon
  • Level 4: May need help or advice
  • Level 5: Minor Chronic Problems
Patients in the Level 4 and Level 5 range are best treated by their doctor during regular office hours. If you don’t have a doctor, we will be happy to care for you at our Walk-In Care Center.
