EMMC Emergency Department

For any condition requiring immediate medical attention from a specially trained emergency medical team, the EMMC Emergency Department doors are always open. Emergency care is a step up in urgency from Walk-In Care.

Approximately 35,000 people a year (or 100 people each day) seek medical treatment in EMMC’s Emergency Department. Getting the right care at the right time is very important during an emergency. People with serious illnesses and injuries, such as, severe pain, bleeding, a high fever, or people who are showing symptoms of a heart attack or stroke, should not hesitate to call 9-1-1 and come to the EMMC Emergency Department.

People with non-urgent conditions are encouraged to visit their doctor or other healthcare provider during regular office hours. Your own provider knows your medical history best, and can provide you with the necessary follow-up care. If an appointment is not available with your provider, you can access EMMC’s Walk-In Care Center.

EMMC’s Emergency Department works very closely with Acadia Hospital to provide emergency psychiatric treatment and assessment of psychiatric illnesses. Some people may benefit from accessing the Acadia Hospital directly, while others may need to be seen in the Emergency Department first. If you are unsure about where you should go to receive psychiatric services, please contact the Acadia Hospital at 207-973-6100, or the EMMC Emergency Department at 207-973-8000.

This Condition Assessment Tool has been developed to help you decide when to access EMMC's Emergency Department, and when to access Walk-In Care or your primary care provider. This information will also help you know what to expect when you arrive at EMMC’s Emergency Department.
