Surgery and Trauma Specialists of Maine provides complete general and trauma surgery services including all general surgery, minimally invasive surgery, advanced laparoscopic surgery, robotic assisted surgery, and endoscopy. 

David J. Burke, MD, FACS
General and Trauma Surgery
Dr. Burke is a graduate of New York Medical College. He completed his surgical residency at the University of Illinois, Chicago, and his fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh. He is a certified diplomat of the National Board of Medical Examiners; he is also ACLS certified, ATLS certified; and he is board certified in general surgery and critical care medicine. He is a fellow in the American College of Surgeons.

Dr. Burke is an instructor with the Society of Critical Care Medicine where he teaches Fundamental Critical Care Support. He also co-chairs the Trauma Quality Assurance and Improvement Committee, is a member of the Surgical Intensive Care Unit Committee, as well as the Department of Surgery Quality Improvement Committee. Dr. Burke has special interest in trauma, general surgery, and critical care.

Amy Fenwick, MD, FACS
General and Trauma Surgery
Dr. Fenwick is a graduate of Bard College and Georgetown University. She completed her residency in general surgery at the University of Connecticut School of Medicine, as well as a fellowship in Critical Care, also at the University of Connecticut School of Medicine.

Dr. Fenwick has interests in laparoscopic and breast surgery.

Mark Grant, MD
General and Trauma Surgery
Dr. Grant completed medical school at the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill, Barbados, and completed a residency at Staten Island University Hospital in Staten Island, New York. Prior to joining EMMC, Dr. Grant worked at UMDNJ in Newark, New Jersey where he was a Fellow in Trauma Surgery and Critical Care. Dr. Grant is board certified in General Surgery, a member of the American College of Surgeons, Eastern Association for the Surgery of Trauma, and Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons.

Dr. Grant is interested in surgical education and is an instructor in Advance Trauma Life Support.

Rafael J. Grossmann, MD, FACS
General and Trauma Surgery
Dr. Grossmann attended medical school at the Universidad Central de Venezuela. He completed his surgery residency in Ann Arbor, Michigan. He also furthered his advanced laparoscopic training at Beth Israel Medical Center.. Dr. Grossmann is certified by the American Board of Surgery. He is an ATLS and a FCCS instructor.

Dr. Grossmann is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He is also a member of the Frederick A. Coller Surgical Society, the Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons, and the Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons. He has special interests in trauma, minimally invasive and advanced laparoscopic surgery, including Single Port Access Surgery, GERD and endocrine surgery (thyroid-parathyroid), robotically-assisted surgery and Telemedicine innovation.

Ali Jawed, MD
General and Trauma Surgery
Dr. Jawed completed medical school at Aga Khan University in Karachi, Pakistan and completed a General Surgery Residency at Washington Hospital Center in Washington DC.
Prior to joining EMMC, Dr. Jawed worked at Washington Hospital Center in Washington DC where he was a Fellow in Trauma/Surgical Critical Care.

Joanmarie D. Pellegrini, MD, FACS
General and Trauma Surgery
Dr. Pellegrini is a graduate of East Anchorage High School, Anchorage, Alaska. She graduated from Cornell University in 1988 and Tufts University School of Medicine in 1993. She completed her surgical residency at the University of Massachusetts, and a fellowship in Critical Care at Boston University.

Dr. Pellegrini, who is a fellow in the American College of Surgeons, as a well as a member of the Society of Critical Care Medicine, and Eastern Association for the Surgery of Trauma.

Dr. Pellegrini is an ATLS instructor and course director, as well as ACLS certified. She is board-certified in Surgical Critical Care, and involved in WABI TV’s Healthy Living. She has special interests in trauma, critical care, organ and tissue donation, endoscopy, complex hernias, and fistulas.

Sasha Sotirovic, MD
General and Trauma Surgery
Dr. Sotirovic completed medical school and a General Surgery residency at the Royal College of Surgeons in Dublin, Ireland. In addition, he completed a General Surgery Residency at Nassau University Medical Centre in New York and completed a Trauma/Critical Care Fellowship at LSU in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Michael graduated from Cornell University Medical College Physician Assistant Program in 1995. He is certified by the National Commission on Certification for Physician Assistants and the Maine State Board of Registration of Physician Assistants. In addition, Michael is ATLS and ACLS certified, and he is certified in funadmentals of critical care support.

He is a member of the American Academy of Physician Assistants, the American Association of Surgical Physician Assistants, and the Society of Critical Care Medicine.

Michael has special interest in critical care and general surgery.

Craig graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Texas Health Science Center at Dallas in 1985 and a Masters Degree from the University of Nebraska in 2001. He is certified by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants. Craig is a fellow member of the American Academy of Physician Assistants.

John received his Bachelor's Degree in Medical Laboratory Science at the Unviersity of New Hampshire, Durham, NH. He completed his Master's Degree in Physician Assistant Studies at Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Services.

He is certified by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants, he is also certified in basic and advanced cardiac life support. John is a member of the American Academy of Physician Assistants.

David B. Carmack, MD
Medical Director, Orthopaedic and Orthopaedic Trauma
Dr. Carmack is a graduate of the University of California, Berkeley (B.A. Physiology/Anatomy), the College of Physicians and Surgeons at Columbia University (MD). He completed his Orthopaedic Surgery residency at Wilford Hall USAF Medical Center in San Antonio, TX, and his Orthopaedic Trauma Fellowship at Detroit Receiving Hospital, in Detroit, MI. He served 13 years of Active Duty with the USAF and currently serves in the Active USAF Reserve. He relocated to Bangor in 2005. He is board certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery. He is an instructor with Advanced Trauma Life Support. He is a fellow in the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, as well as a member of the Orthopaedic Trauma Association, Society of Military Orthopaedic Surgeons, and AO North America Faculty, as well as many other professional organizations.

Dr. Carmack is a Colonel with the United States Air Force Reserve. In 2009, he was honored for his service while deployed in Iraq. In 2001 he was honored with the United States Joint Service Commendation Medal for Outstanding Performance leading orthopaedic surgery training for the Joint Trauma Center. In 1995 he received the USAF Commendation Medal for Outstanding performance as a flight surgeon with the 313th Test Squadron. Dr. Carmack practices General Orthopaedic surgery (adult and children), with special interests in Orthopaedic Trauma, Shoulder pathology and arthritis, caring for mangled extremities with limb salvage, caring for patients with amputations, caring for patients in the need of an amputation, and many other areas of orthopaedic surgery.

James R. Curtis, MD
Orthopeadic Trauma

Dr. Curtis graduated from Downeast Medical College in 1968. He completed his residency in general surgery at St.Luke's Hospital, and his residency in Orthopedic Surgery, also at St. Luke's Hospital. He is board-certified in orthopedic surgery by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery.

He is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery, Arthroscopy Association of North America, Diplomat National Board of Medical Examiners, Maine Medical Association, Maine Society of Orthopaedic Surgeons, International Arthroscopy Association, Penobscot County Medical Society.

Dr. Curtis has been an active member of the Eastern Maine Medical Center Staff for over 34 years.

F. Parke Oldenburg, MD
Lead Physician, Orthopaedic Trauma Surgery

Dr. Oldenburg completed his undergraduate education at Tufts University and medical school at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine in Cleveland, Ohio. In addition, he completed an Orthopaedic Residency at University Hospitals of Cleveland - Case Medical Center. During his residency he was awarded the Allen Fellowship to study cartilage growth. He completed an orthopaedic trauma fellowship at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, Washington.

Dr. Oldenburg is Chair of the Fracture Conference at EMMC and an instructor for the AO North America. He has a special interest in pelvic and acetabular fractures as well as limb deformity.

George N. Partal, MD
Orthopaedic Trauma Surgery
Dr. Partal is a graduate of Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine and Dentistry. He completed his residency in orthopedic surgery at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry, a fellowship in orthopedic trauma at Hospital for Special Surgery, and a fellowship in orthopedic traumatology at R. Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore, Maryland. Dr. Partal is certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery.

He was a senior clinical associate in orthopaedic surgery at Weill Medical College of Cornell University from 2005 - 2006. Dr. Partal has interests in orthopaedic traumatology, pelvic and acetabular injuries, and complex periarticular fractures.

Rajendra P. Tripathi, MD
Orthopaedic Trauma Surgery

Dr. Triapathi graduated from All-India Institute of Medical Sciences in 1976. He completed his residency at National Orthopedic and Rehabilitation Hospital. He is certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery, and Dr. Tripathi is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He is also a member of the Orthopedic Trauma Association.

Dr. Tripathi has special interest in orthopedic trauma surgery.

Timothy Foster Pruchnic, MD
Hand and Reconstructive

Dr. Pruchnic obtained his medical degree from Drexel University School of Medicine in 2000. He completed training in general surgery and abdominal organ transplantation in Tampa, Florida. Pursuing a dream that developed early in medical school, Dr. Pruchnic joined Doctors Without Borders, traveling and working in Haiti, Sri Lanka, and Papua New Guinea. During that time, he developed an interest in bone and soft tissue reconstruction. He returned home from the highlands of Papua New Guinea and trained at the Christine M. Kleinert Institute for Hand and Microsurgery in Louisville, KY. Desiring to obtain additional experience in orthopedic trauma, Dr. Pruchnic spent an additional 6 months as a fellow at the Princess Alexandra Hospital in Brisbane, Australia. Dr. Pruchnic is a native of western Pennsylvania.

Michelle received an Associate's Deree in Nursing from the University of New England in 1989, Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing from the University of Southern Maine in 1999 and Master’s Degree in Nursing from the University of Southern Maine in 2001. Michelle has 20+ years experience working as an orthopedic nurse in acute care, operating room, and private practice settings and she has 10+ years as Nurse Practitioner and First Assist. Michelle completed her First Assist training through Northern New Mexico Community College in 2001.

Michelle is a member of the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners and the Maine Nurse Practitioner Association. She is certified as a FNP through the American Nurses Credentialing Center.

H. Hollis Caffee, MD
Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery

Dr. Caffee is a graduate of University of Florida College of Medicine. He is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, where he also has a certificate of Added Qualifications in Surgery of the Hand. Dr. Caffee was formerly Professor and Chief of the Division of Plastic Surgery at the University of Florida.

He is a member of the American Association of Plastic Surgeons and American Society for Surgery of the Hand.

Dr. Liliav completed four years of medical school and received an MD degree from the Albany Medical College in Albany, NY and graduated cum laude. Following graduation, he underwent five years of residency training in the field of general surgery and completed his surgical residency at Staten Island University Hospital, Staten Island, NY. Subsequently, Dr. Liliav completed a three year fellowship in plastic, reconstructive, cosmetic, and hand surgery at the University Of Illinois at Chicago.

He is a member of numerous professional organizations, including the American Society of Maxillofacial Surgeons (ASMS), the American College of Surgeons (ACS), and the American College of Physicians and Surgeons (ACPS).

Dara H. Knapp, PA-C
Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery
Dara graduated from Stony Brook University in 2006.

Dara, who is a certified cytogenetic technologist, is certified by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants. She is also certified in advanced cardiac life support and basic EMT.

Dara did one year of one year of didactic education with clinical rotations in psychiatry, internal medicine, orthopedics, emergency medicine, medicine preceptorship, obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics, surgery, geriatrics, and pediatric preceptorship. She is a member of the American Academy of Physician Assistants.

Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery

Precious received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in physician assistant studies at D’Youville College, and completed a nuclear medicine internship with UNC Hospitals. Precious is happy to return to the Atlantic coast where she has lived previously and is looking forward to working with a respected hospital-based surgical practice.

John F. Crowley, DMD, DDS, JD
Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery
Dr. Crowley is a graduate of Case Western Reserve University where he interned at Veterans' Administration Hospital. He completed his residency at Buffalo General Hospital. He is also a graduate of Seton Hall University School of Law.

He is board-certified with the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, as well as National Board of Anesthesiology. Dr. Crowley is a fellow of the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, as well as the International Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. He is head of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Eastern Maine Medical Center.
