There are times that treating an illness requires more than medication. Sherry Winchester, RN, department head for EMMC Family Practice Center, volunteered to help a patient who didn't have the resources needed for a treatment device. Sherry found ways to overcome several obstacles this patient was facing.
The first problem was that the patient did not have electricity in her home. After calls to the local power company, the town authorities, and finally State Representatives failed to get electricity to the patient's home, Sherry found a marine battery and reconverter that could power the patient's device. Sherry also helped the patient work with the insurance company to make sure that the treatment was covered—and then arranged for delivery of the much-needed equipment.
Sherry's co-workers were so impressed with her actions that they nominated her for a Splash award, EMMC's highest recognition for employees who exceed expectations while caring for patients, families, communities, and one another.
