Children are not just small adults. Perhaps there is no more important time to remember this than when a child is sick or injured. The care a child receives must be specialized to the chronological and developmental age of the child. The caregivers and the family become an important team, working through the options and decisions carefully. The professionals at Children's Services of Eastern Maine Medical Center understand those realities and work with children and families every day.
Youngsters in need of hospitalization find a friendly, nurturing atmosphere in our Child and Adolescent Care Center. Designed with the help of the children and families it serves, this state-of-the-art, 27 bed "hospital within a hospital" is a family-centered facility offering a wide range of pediatric specialty services, including intensive care, for Maine's younger patients. Parents are included in the daily care of their children and patient rooms all have built-in living space for a parent to stay in the room with their child as much as they are able. Families may take advantage of amenities on the floor such as family living room, children's play room, teen recreation room and a family kitchen. It's all part of a general philosophy which acknowledges that when a child is sick, the whole family is affected and in need of support.
