EMMC Trauma Care and Adoptive & Foster Families of Maine Focus on Bike Safety at Hampden Children’s Day

8/14/2014

(Bangor, Maine) – Bicycling is a great way for children and families to get some exercise and enjoy our beautiful Maine summers, but injuries can occur if safety isn’t taken into consideration. The EMMC Trauma Care team and Adoptive & Foster Families of Maine are promoting bike safety for kids at this weekend’s Hampden Children’s Day by offering tips and conducting helmet checks.

“A little bit of prevention can go a long way when it comes to bicycle safety,” says Anna Moses, RN, BSN, CCRN, CEN, trauma nurse coordinator at EMMC. “A few simple things like making sure helmets fit correctly and teaching kids to be on the lookout for hazards will ensure they stay safe and have a fun time.”

EMMC Trauma Care and Adoptive & Foster Families of Maine staff will provide reflective stickers and blinking lights at 9:30 am on the soccer field behind Reeds Brook Middle School. Streamers, stickers, and balloons will also be available for kids to use to decorate their bikes.

“We’ll help them decorate their bikes for the parade, get them ready to have fun, and share a few safety tips they should keep in mind anytime they go for a bike ride,” says Anna.

“Adoptive & Foster Families of Maine has been assisting kids with bike decorating at the parade since 2005, and we love getting to take a part in such a positive activity for kids and their families,” adds Bette Hoxie, executive director. “The staff from EMMC has added tremendously to the experience; many hands make light work.”
