Bangor, Maine - On Wednesday, EMMC achieved another surgical milestone, becoming the first hospital in Maine to perform a single-site, robotic-assisted hysterectomy. Pamela Gilmore, MD, the doctor who performed the minimally invasive procedure, notes that while robotic-assisted hysterectomy that uses several incisions isn’t new, performing the surgery through a single incision is, and it has several advantages for patients.
“Today’s patients are looking for options that reduce discomfort and recovery time,” says Dr. Gilmore. “A single incision benefits many patients who are in need of a hysterectomy. We’re proud to be able to offer this option at EMMC.”
During a robotic-assisted hysterectomy, the physician removes the patient’s uterus through one small incision in the navel. Because the incision is so small, the surgery is virtually scar free.
When performing robotic-assisted surgery, Dr. Gilmore uses controls to move the robotic instruments with great precision. She uses a high definition camera to see a detailed view inside the patient’s abdomen.
There are several different methods of performing a hysterectomy, and physicians and patients will work together to determine the best option for every patient’s individual situation. Abdominal hysterectomies that require a significant cut on the belly have largely been replaced by less invasive approaches including conventional laparoscopy, which is another minimally invasive approach to surgery, and robotic-assisted surgery.
