EMMC Goes Red to Raise Awareness of Heart Disease

2/6/2014

(Bangor, Maine) – It’s well-known that heart disease is the leading cause of death among men in the United States, but what many don’t know is that it’s also the leading cause of death in women. Seventy-eight percent of EMMC’s employees are female, and this month, the hospital is focused on educating staff, as well as the community, on the signs and statistics of heart disease in women.

The first Friday of every February, EMMC recognizes Wear Red Day, a national initiative to raise awareness of heart disease in women. As part of the initiative, staff from EMMC Heart Care are coming together to hold an informational event from 11 am to 2 pm Friday, February 7, in the cafeteria of the hospital, where they will distribute pamphlets, magnets, and a number of other items to visitors and fellow staff members to increase awareness of heart disease and inform the community about the best ways to prevent it. All staff members are also encouraged to wear red to help raise awareness.

“Wear Red Day has really become a tradition here at Eastern Maine Medical Center,” says Deborah Richards, RN, BS, administrator for EMMC Heart Care. “This event is part of our commitment to engaging and educating our community on heart disease, with a specific focus on how women are affected, and how they can take steps to save their life.”
