EMMC’s Standard in Quality Earns Top National Score: Four EMHS Hospitals Earn an “A” Rating

10/25/2013
(Bangor, Maine) - One of the biggest things we can do for sick patients is to keep them safe during their hospital visit. That’s why EMMC sets high safety standards for their care. This summer, EMMC achieved Zero Preventable Errors in its core measures for the first time. This week, that dedication to quality has earned EMMC and three other EMHS member hospitals recognition for outstanding performance from The Leapfrog Group, an independent national nonprofit run by employers and other large purchasers of health benefits.

The “A” safety score was given to EMMC in the most recent update by the Hospital Safety ScoreSM, with scores A through F assigned to US hospitals based on 26 different metrics including preventable medical errors, injuries, accidents, and infections. The Leapfrog Group compiles and releases safety scores to provide the public with information they can use to make informed decisions about quality healthcare for themselves and their families.

“This score reflects each staff member’s dedication to patient safety. We accomplish this benchmark by hard-wiring technology that ensures the safest processes in patient care and a focus on zero preventable errors in our core measures,” said James Raczek, MD, FAAFP, EMMC senior vice president, chief operating officer, and chief medical officer. “It takes the entire hospital to embrace a culture of safety and this vigilance keeps us on track.”

“While Maine had the highest percentage of hospitals in the nation to receive an ‘A,’ it is especially gratifying that Eastern Maine Medical Center, Inland Hospital, TAMC, and our newest member, Mercy all earned top honors,” says Michelle Hood, FACHE, EMHS president and CEO.
