Bangor, ME – EMHS affiliates in Bangor, Acadia Hospital and Eastern Maine Medical Center, have both achieved the prestigious Well Workplace designation from the Wellness Council of America (WELCOA). Acadia, at their first attempt, has received the Gold Level, signifying the hospital has successfully built comprehensive wellness initiatives and was able to demonstrate concrete outcomes. EMMC has received the Platinum Level which is granted to organizations that are forging new ground by linking health promotion objectives to business outcomes.
According to WELCOA President David Hunnicutt, PhD, “By achieving this level of excellence in workplace wellness programming, Acadia Hospital and EMMC have demonstrated a commitment to protecting and enhancing the health and well-being of its most valuable assets—their employees.”
The rigorous process to become a designated Well Workplace was enthusiastically performed by an employee wellness committee led by Operations and Adult Outpatient Manager Kim Alexander, RNC at Acadia and Debi McCann, RN, director of Wellness at EMMC.
“Wellness and safety have been key areas of focus at Acadia, so this designation comes at a great time and demonstrates that we are on the right track, given that this was our first time applying. I am extremely proud of the work performed by the hospital’s wellness committee and believe investing in our employees will continue to pay dividends as we move forward,” observed Acadia President and CEO Daniel B. Coffey.
EMMC’s McCann states, “As a system EMHS has a demonstrated commitment to a workplace program is comprehensive and effective. At EMMC we support the health and wellness of more than 3700. We have successfully integrated WELCOA’s seven benchmarks and achieved WELCOA Workplace Platinum for the second time and we are taking steps beyond that to support the wellness of families, community, and demonstrate a return on investment.”
Some of the innovative wellness programs and activities offered to employees have included onsite fitness classes, the Guiding Stars food rating system in the cafeteria, discounted gym memberships, Move & Improve programs, and free wellness coaching. An additional program unique to Acadia is Body Bucks, an outcome–based health improvement program where employees can earn money (Body Bucks) by either attaining or sustaining personal goals that result in overall improved health status.
