Advanced heart care - cardiovascular and heart surgery

Being diagnosed with heart disease or cardiovascular disease can be scary, but you're not alone. EMMC Heart Care, located at Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor, is the only comprehensive heart center serving the northern two thirds of the state. For more than 40 years our team of cardiologists and cardiac surgeons have dedicated themselves to the diagnosis and treatment of heart disease. We're lucky to have a comprehensive heart center that is centrally located and that specializes in high-tech, quality cardiac care in Maine.

Heart Center Cath LabOur team of cardiologists and cardiac surgeons, who are each board certified and together represent more than 250 years of experience, is dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of heart disease. EMMC Heart Care offers two cardiovascular operating rooms, three cardiac catheterization labs and two electrophysiology labs. EMMC's Heart Care employees care for more than 500 surgical patients and perform more than 44,400 cardiac tests, 5,800 cardiac catheterizations, 3,250 imaging procedures, 1,400 percutaneous interventions, and 400 cardiac surgical procedures each year. The depth of our expertise means we are ready for virtually any healthcare need - anticipated or unanticipated. Our dedication to innovation allows us to provide groundbreaking treatments, clinical trials, and best practices in quality of care to all our patients.

Cardiovascular Surgery

We are one of only three centers in Maine to perform emergency cardiac catheterization during a heart attack and we're on the leading edge of new techniques for cardiac patients. EMMC recently instituted a therapeutic hypothermia protocol which means we cool patients to a precise temperature using special equipment to preserve brain function in the hours after cardiac arrest, and we are the leading center in New England performing radial arterial catheterization. Other leading-edge procedures include:

  • Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI): A non-surgical procedure, which allows our patients more comfort at less risk during a cardiac catheterization.
  • Electrophysiology (EP): Procedures to treat an abnormal heart rhythm in our patients resulting in ablation if necessary.
  • Device Implants: This includes pacemakers and implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD).
  • Peripheral arterial evaluation and treatment.

The care our patients receive goes beyond the inpatient experience. Cardiac Wellness of Maine, a state-of-the-art cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation, and wellness facility, is certified by the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation. The team includes registered nurses, exercise physiologists, a respiratory therapist, dietician, and medical director who develop individualized treatment plans and oversee patient progress to recovery and the prevention of further heart and lung disease in the future.

You can choose where you go. We encourage you to talk to your doctor about EMMC and its cardiac catheterization lab. Remember, you should discuss all the options with your doctor before selecting a hospital for your heart catheterization. Keep in mind that approximately 35 percent of all patients who have a heart catheterization need to have a procedure (such as an angioplasty or stent) to fix the problems that are found. Another 15 percent need cardiac surgery services that we are also proud to offer at EMMC. Make sure you make the right choice for your heart catheterization where you can be diagnosed and treated all in the same place, often at the same time.
From prevention education to diagnosis to cardiovascular treatment to rehabilitation, EMMC Heart Care is your comprehensive advanced heart care center in the heart of Maine. If you would like more information on the services offered at EMMC Heart Care, please call 973-7000.

Inpatient Cardiac Care
At EMMC, we have 20 cardiac critical care beds located on the first floor. We also have 64 cardiac telemetry beds located on the third and fourth floors where we are able to monitor each patient's heart activity via radio signals. Each patient wears a small electronic device that has stick-on electrodes attached to the body near the heart. This device emits a radio signal to our computer, and if a patient's heart begins to function irregularly, a technician will immediately notify the patient's nurse. Our fourth floor also features a private conference room for discussions with families, and a spacious waiting room for visitors. Most importantly, all of our cardiac nurses receive special, advanced training to care for patients with heart conditions and EMMC is proud to be accredited by the Joint Commission for the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations, a national agency devoted to developing and monitoring hospital quality measures.
