Eastern Maine Medical Center's Anesthesia department provides complete anesthesia services, including general, spinal, regional, Monitered Anesthesia Care (MAC), and acute interventional pain management.
Anesthesia services are available to inpatients and outpatients regardless of age, sex, race or financial class on an emergent, urgent and elective basis. Anesthesia back-up call services are available within 20 minutes after anesthesia is determined necessary for all emergency and obstetric cases.

- Perioperative pain management
- Intraoperative transesophageal echocardiography
- Critical-care medicine
- Management of acute and chronic pain
- Diagnosis of acute and chronic pain syndromes
- Medical management of painful conditions
- Kyphoplasty
- Injections and nerve blocks
- Spinal-cord stimulation
- Spinal-infusion systems
- Coordination of comprehensive pain management services
- Nursing and case management
- Obstetrical analgesia and anesthesia
Standards of Practice:
Policies and procedures are formulated by using information and data obtained from the American Society of Anesthesiologists, the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists, and the Joint Commission, as well as information submitted by anesthesiologists and certified registered nurse anesthetists to allow for the formulation of policies appropriate to the resources and needs of this facility. All policies are reviewed and approved by the Chief of Anesthesiology and are subject to the Chief Medical Officer’s approval.
